Description: The question of when humans first reached the Americas has been a subject of much discussion in recent years with dates being pushed further and further back in time. There was the claim that human footprints found in New Mexico date to 21,000 to 23,000 years ago, there was apparently a human occupation site in Chile dated to 18,500 years ago and a site in Texas said to date back 20,000 years. For every news story and YouTube video about these sites, the comment of ‘Things Keep on getting Older’ is seen more and more frequently, and the last few years have been an exciting time for archaeology. But saying that, and the new study that's been published by scientific journal PLOS One and linked below, actually says that things may actually be getting younger, as it looks to revise the older dating of human occupation from the past years. Of course the view for many years was that hunter-gatherers crossed the Bering Strait from Asia to the Americas around 14,200 years ago, when large swathes of North America were covered in ice. From there, over time, people migrated south through the Americas and settled accordingly. Whilst new discoveries in recent years have challenged this concept, the new study shows that this is still the most likely scenario. Watch the video to learn more.
